Blepharoplasty / Eyelid Lift
Our board-certified ophthalmologists perform an eyelid surgery known as a blepharoplasty. The procedure is both a functional procedure that may be covered by insurance if it is a medical necessity; otherwise, it is considered a cosmetic procedure that will not be covered by insurance
The surgery involves removal or repositioning of the excess tissue that has impacted the vision or has caused discomfort. Both upper eyelid and lower eyelid procedures may be performed depending on the nature of the condition. Typically, the upper eyelid’s excessive skin will hang over the eyelashes and deteriorate the peripheral vision. Most commonly, the outer and upper fields of vision are affected and may cause trouble with reading or driving. Patients who have less severe amounts of excess skin may opt to have the procedure for cosmetic reasons. Most lower eyelid blepharoplasties are for cosmetic reasons, where patients are looking to improve “bags” under their eyes, or they are trying to reduce wrinkles
Blepharoplasty is performed by making external incisions along the skin lines of the eyelid(s), most commonly at the creases of the upper eyelids and just below the lashes of the lower lids, or on the inside surface of the lower eyelid. Depending on the seriousness of the condition, the procedure may take upwards of three hours to complete. The swelling and bruising will be substantial for the first two weeks following the surgery, but the results will still take months to fully notice.
